Luther College/Stone Soup Sunday on October 31st

Our Savior’s 150th Anniversary celebration continues on October 31st with Luther College/Stone Soup Sunday. Worship is at a special time (10:30 am) with guest speaker Richard L. Torgerson, President of Luther College.
Nordic Choir will also perform under the direction of Dr. Craig Arnold. A Stone Soup lunch will be served in the Fellowship Hall at 11:45 am following worship.
Richard L. Torgerson became president of Luther College in July, 1999. He was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, on July 26, 1943. His father operated a wheat farm, and his mother was a school teacher. Rick left the family farm to attend college at Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota, where he completed a bachelor’s degree with majors in biology and physical education. He then completed a master’s degree in entomology in 1966 and a doctorate in entomology and zoology in 1969. There followed thirty years of teaching and administrative work at five different colleges prior to coming to Luther College—three years as assistant professor of biology at Wartburg College; ten years on the faculty of biology at Texas Lutheran College, the final two years there serving as assistant dean for academic affairs; three years as vice president for academic affairs and academic dean at Baker University, Baldwin, Kansas; seven years as vice president and academic dean at Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kansas, including a year as acting president; six years as vice president for development at Wartburg College; and a year-and-a-half as vice president for development at Gustavus Adolphus College.
Nordic Choir, founded in 1946, enjoys national and international acclaim as a premier collegiate choral ensemble in the United States. Following the 57-year tenure of Weston Noble, Nordic Choir is currently under the direction of Dr. Craig Arnold, named director of choral activities at Luther College in 2005. Nordic Choir is Luther’s flagship choir in a choral program that comprises three upper-class mixed touring choirs, two first-year choirs, and an upper-class women’s choir.
Stone Soup – Our Savior’s Lutheran Church will be enacting the story called “Stone Soup.” During the service, the story will be read and then the congregation will feast on Stone Soup after church. That day we will ask people to bring a quart container of vegetables ready to be thrown in a beef, chicken, or vegetarian broth for Stone Soup. (Chopped up potatoes or carrots or fresh or frozen peas are most needed. We could also use some chopped up celery, parsnips, turnips, or onions.) There will be enough soup for everyone if you forget your vegetables at home. If you have any questions, please contact Dan Lintin.

October 31: Jeremiah 1:4-19
November 7: John 8:31-36
November 14: Romans 7:15-25a

Steve Marking Hired as New Choir Director/Music Coordinator
We are pleased to announce that Steve Marking has accepted our position of Vocal Music Coordinator and has started to plan for the fall. We welcome him on board!
Steve is a Holmen resident, a Viterbo grad who sang here at OSLC as a student with Byron Blackmore, and went on to do graduate work at Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore. He was a founding member of the Lyric Opera Company of New York, and has lived in upstate New York for some years, where he has over 10 years experience directing church choirs. Steve has now returned to Brice Prairie.
He is a professional singer who does concerts in styles ranging from Sinatra to opera. He hopes to help us develop a praise service over time, and enlarge our choir participation. Steve is known as an excellent and patient teacher, helping people exceed their goals with new vocal techniques. He is also teaching vocal students at Studio di Canto in Onalaska with his friend Dean Stude Witz and has recently taken a leadership role with the Coulee Region Gospel Choir.

We received new members at the end of July, and now are eager to bring into our fellowship others who have expressed a desire to learn about our Lutheran faith and our congregation. Classes are for all who joined in July, anyone seeking membership or adult confirmation, anyone wishing to be baptized, anyone coming from another faith or denomination, and anyone who is returning to worship after being gone from church for some years. You can also come if you just want to ask questions, whether a life-long Lutheran or brand new to our faith.
We meet at 4:00 pm for five Sundays beginning on September 26th. If that is not a workable time or if you need to miss some sessions, Pastor Jolivette can do some Saturday morning alternatives. We have spouses and partners and children of members who could surely be invited to join with us. We have neighbors and work acquaintances who may have talked about faith and asked you questions whom you can invite. Come along with your neighbor, partner or spouse.
Our next new member Sunday is All Saints’ Sunday, November 7th. Help us welcome a new group of saints!
Choir Begins September 12th
Our first choir rehearsal will be Sunday, September 12th. The 12th is also Rally Sunday, our springboard to all the activities that take place here at OSLC during the school year. Practice is 8:00 am on Sundays which the choir sings. Steve Marking, our new choir director, will have a schedule ready when we return and practices will be according to that schedule. We meet in the choir room, practice and sing for the service at 9:00 am that same day.
We welcome all who wish to praise the Lord in song, whether a long time member or joining for the first time.

The office will get transfer requests as appropriate from your previous congregation and take care of all the paperwork.
We give a special invitation to fiancés, partners and spouses of members to join us in ministry. We look for a large group. Feel free to use the pew card to pass along any intentions or information.

Mark your calendars for “Church in the Park” on Sunday, June 13th, 2010. We will hold our Sunday service in the Riverside Park band shell at 9:00 a.m. Bring your own lawn chair or use the benches (with backs!) at the park. Sunscreen, hats and sunglasses are also good things to remember. Jane and Dave Umnus will be leading us in song along with Mike and Nancy Caucutt.
In the case of questionable weather, please check the church website or the call the church office.
Singers and Musicians Needed For Summer Worship
Calling All Singers! On the third Sunday of each month this summer, everyone ages 3-103 is invited to praise the Lord with a simple, fun song during church! Kaye will start rehearsal at 8:15 and end at 8:45 in the choir room. Juice will be provided. We will sing ”Labara” in June, “Here I am Lord” in July, and ”Jesu, Jesu, fill us with your love” in August. (The congregation will join with us on the refrain of each song so everyone can sing together.) The dates to sing are June 20, July 18, and August 15.
We also invite all, choir members or not, including school age children, to enhance worship with a musical performance of their own. A solo, duet, trio, etc., of vocal, piano, or other instrument is very welcomed. Please contact Louise Temte to make arrangements.
