Book Club Selection For April: Making the Rounds with Oscar
March 15, 2011
Our April 2011 book selection is Making the Rounds with Oscar by David Dosa, M.D. (225 pages) An otherwise ordinary cat, Oscar has the uncanny ability to sense when people are about to die. Adopted by staff members at Steere House nursing home when he was a kitten, the three-year old cat has presided over the deaths of more than twenty-five nursing home residents thus far. His mere presence at the bedside is viewed by physicians and nursing-home staff as an almost absolute indicator of impending death, considered a blessing because it allows time to notify families that the end is near and because he provides companionship to those who would otherwise have died alone. Dr. Dosa gives us Oscar’s story, using the cat and the stories of several patients to examine end-of life care as it exists today. Heartfelt, inspiring, and sometimes even funny, this book allows listeners into a world that is often misunderstood and rarely seen from the outside.
We have a wonderful group of members who enjoys reading and then coming together for a discussion usually held on the last Thursday of the month at 6:30 p.m. What makes our discussions so interesting is that each of us looks at the reading through own lens and life experience enabling us to bring a unique viewpoint to the group.
We welcome anyone who would like to become a part of the discussion – even if it is just for that one book that piques your curiosity. Books chosen are available at the public library or you may purchase a copy on your own or through Sandra Hansen. We hope to see you there!

Book Club Selection For March: The Book of Dun Cow
March 5, 2011

Please join us in March when we will be reading The Book of Dun Cow, by Walter Wangerin Jr. (256 pages). Wangerin’s profound fantasy concerns a time when the sun turned around the earth and the animals could speak, when Chauntecleer the Rooster ruled over a more or less peaceful kingdom. What the animals did not know was that they were the Keepers of Wyrm, monster of evil long imprisoned beneath the earth … and Wyrm, sub terra, was breaking free.
This story of good vs. evil is as relevant today as twenty-five years ago when Walter Wangerin Jr. received the National Book Award for The Book of the Dun Cow. His other books include The Book of God, Ragman and Other Cries of Faith, and Miz Lil and the Chronicles of Grace.
We have a wonderful group of members who enjoy reading and then coming together for a discussion of the book of the month. Our next meeting is Thursday, April 7 at 6:30 p.m. We hope to see you there!

Rev. Vern Skarstad Added To OSLC Visitation Pastor Staff

Our church council has contracted for additional hours of visitation with Rev. Vern Skarstad of Holmen. He pastors Bell’s Coulee Lutheran Church, north of Hwy. 16 between West Salem and Bangor, but only on Sunday. He will now add hours during the week here to offer pastoral care to our members in their homes.
We can’t introduce him on Sundays due to his church responsibilities, but we all will meet him during Lenten mid-week services. Rev. Skarstad retired to Holmen with wife Elaine after last serving as counseling pastor at Atonement Lutheran, Florissant (St. Louis), Missouri. They are active members of Holmen Lutheran Church. Welcome him when he calls on you. And let our church office know if you desire a pastoral visit.
