Wanted: Photos for Peru Delegation

May 7, 2010

Help send our church to our companions in Peru! How? Take a picture of our congregation – in worship, having a potluck, youth in action, etc. – and it will be shared with our brothers and sisters in Christ in Peru!! Our Peru delegation is looking for your photos and perhaps a written greeting to share with the Peruvian churches while on their delegation July 1-14.

Let’s make sure our OSLC congregation is included. Send photos to the synod office digitally (if possible), in care of the Peru delegation. Photos will be also be shown on screen at our upcoming synod assembly. Thank you!

April 28, 2010
Filed under Get Involved, Ministries, Social Ministries

Lutheran World Relief distributes layettes to new mothers in nearly 20 countries. During a recent five year period, over 225,000 layettes were distributed. The most amazing fact is that each layette was provided by someone much like you, a caring member of a congregation just like OSLC!!

Layette Kits will be available in the Narthex on Mother’s Day, Sunday May 9th, 2010. They are due back on Rally Sunday, September 12th. Each layette kit should include the following:

  • Two shirts (onesies)
  • Two gowns or sleepers
  • Two receiving blankets
  • Four cloth diapers
  • Two wash cloths
  • One bath-size bar of soap
  • Two diaper pins

Items can be new or used. Be sure to check out the rummage sales this summer. Used items must be clean and in good repair. Receiving blankets and diapers may be made of flannel. Please vary the sizes of clothing (up to 24 months) so the layettes will continue to be useful as the baby grows. Any questions and/or concerns may be directed to Rod Tisthammer.

May Book Club Selection: The Silenced

April 28, 2010

Our May book The Silenced is by James DeVita. Consigned to a prison-like Youth Training Facility because of her parents’ political activities, Marena organizes a resistance movement to combat the restrictive policies of the ruling Zero Tolerance party. This is a gripping read and adults and young adults will certainly empathize with the characters’ conflicts between self-expression and a desire to fit in. Readers will find the Zero Tolerance credo that the state’s first priority must be the safety of its citizens to have a chilling resonance with statements in the news today.

The OSLC Book Club will NOT meet on Thursday, May 27th as planned. We will meet to discuss both May’s book, The Silenced, and June’s book, The Help by Kathryn Stockett, on Thursday, June 17th at 6:30 p.m. All readers are welcome!

April Book Club Selection: The Omnivore’s Dilemma

March 24, 2010

The Our Savior’s Book Club selection for April is The Omnivore’s Dilemma by Michael Pollan. The book offers insight into food consumption in the twenty-first century, explaining how an abundance of unlimited food varieties reveals the responsibilities of consumers to protect their health and the environment.

Pollan’s easy writing style and unique approach freshen this contemporary debate. Our book discussion will take place on Thursday, April 29th at 6:30 p.m.
